One and Three Chairs

January 2024 | GRiD Singapore

The Critical Craft Collective (CCC) presents a pop-up studio at GR!D that takes Joseph Kosuth’s ‘One and Three Chairs’ (1965) as a departure point. In our version of ‘One and Three Chairs’, artists and researchers have been invited to respond to social constructions of meaning and to rethink the meaning- making process. Welcoming a broad spectrum of interpretations, the showcases seek to disentangle the representational, textual or conceptual underpinnings of object/s and their associations, materials and mediums.

To begin with, the invited artists/researchers will bring in a chair to the (communal) table. Mobilising a guerilla- style studio to reimagine lateral styles of working, we seek to facilitate the sharing of conversations and resources which distributes power and agency across all participants. The concept of a ‘chair-person’ would be periodically handed from one member to the next, empowering them to conduct their desired happenings and activations within the GR!D space.

The premium placed on real estate in Singapore encourages one to utilise adaptive approaches to home/studio making, critically thinking about how we make space and broadening the scopes of how one produces work. Taking cues from CCC’s interest and research in unpacking notions of artistic space-making, radical domesticity and craft, we will have artists/researchers adopt ways of working that encourages mobility/portability when conceptualising ideas related to the space we inhabit at GR!D.
